Several swordsmiths named Kuniyoshi appeared during the Shinshinto period, and this sword has a Hozon Token certificate issued, identifying it as the work of a swordsmith active in Bushu.
The sword features a widened width from the base to the tip, with a chukissaki. It has a gentle and elegant appearance. The kitae (forging pattern) is a well-forged ko-itame hada, densely packed with thick ji-nie and fine chikei, making it extremely refined. It looks similar to Awataguchi or Rai works. The hamon is suguha with subtle variations, mixed with fine midare, and the boshi is straight on both sides, ending in a rounded tip that elegantly returns, extending to below the yokote.
Although the blade length is short, the sword boasts a high level of completion, almost mistakable for a top-quality Koto work at a glance. There is a slight discoloration around the monouchi area, likely from cutting tatami mats, but it is not significant to the naked eye. For those who wish to have this corrected, we offer a partial cosmetic polishing service at an additional cost.
